  • Who owns the user data? The users, that's who!!

This week the EU Commission is tightening the screws on the area of deep packet inspection . Where this will end up is anyones guess, but we are heading down a road that will kill the promise of the communications industry getting into Advertising. The buzz surrounding this topic has been waxing and waning for several years now. Everyone gets the concept, but little seems to be happening on the ground. More broadly, there is a growing belief that service providers can bridge the revenue gap left...
  • Chinese Telecom Market moves to Pole Position

One of the unexpected side-effects of this global recession is the way it is catapulting China to become the most important telecoms market in the world. The combined effect of a slowdown of Capex investment across US & Europe, with the Chinese government driven Capex investment program of ~$50bn/year for the next two years, means that a staggering 50% of the global annual telecoms capex investment over the next two years will come from China . And this may have a significant impact on the decisions...
  • Management World 2009: Insightful Keynotes and Practical Summits

No matter where you are in the world, the economic recession that hit us like a ton of bricks in 2008 is continuing to impact just about every industry and market. And even a stalwart area like communications is feeling the effects of the global financial situation. Surviving these tough times is forefront on the minds of operators everywhere, which is why TM Forum’s flagship event – Management World 2009 – which is being held May 4-8 in Nice, France, is the place to be to learn...
  • Opportunities Abound – If You Know Where to Look

Things may be bad all over, but service providers still have to focus on what’s coming down the road. We’ve established that things are bad everywhere and across all industries. That’s not news to anyone, and while we have created a number of unique new financial challenges, we still have to focus on the same management problems and challenges we were dealing with 12 months ago. But while the world is in a financial freefall, and we haven’t quite hit bottom yet, I would venture...
  • Bringing Mobile All Together

After 20 years of disconnected mobile networks are we finally heading towards a single unified global mobile technology? With the recent unanimity surrounding LTE, perhaps we finally are. Recent research indicates that 26 network operators have committed to LTE deployments, and among these are the biggest global service providers such as Verizon, Vodafone, NTT DoCoMo, SK Telecom and China Telecom. And if these guys all choose LTE, all the smaller players will have little choice due to the pressures...
  • Focus on the Opportunity not the Pain

One of the technology areas that is accelerating through this downturn is Long Term Evolution (LTE), the fourth generation mobile network. While the whole world is clinging tightly to its wallets, auctions are underway for 4G licenses, vendors are demonstrating their solutions and contracts are being awarded ( Verizon awards 4G contracts worth billions ) . Ericsson, Huawei and Alcatel-Lucent seem to be the early winners, but there is a long race to run to see who will succeed in the infrastructure...
