The European Commission last week suggested some serious reforms to data protection laws last that could have implications for everyone that uses the Internet or provides services over the Internet, including CSPs. For a start, companies operating over the Internet will have to seek explicit consent from users if they plan to use data about them, including when it is being collected, how long it will be stored, and for what purpose it is being used for. (Sounds a bit like Google’s new privacy... -
It's pretty certain that most CSPs are mindful that their data is neither clean nor consistent across their operations. Anyone embarking in any form of transformation project finds data cleansing the first major hurdle. It is therefore good to see that Subex and Heavy Reading conducted some reasonably in-depth research into the problem by interviewing 95 operators worldwide. Conducting research on probably what Subex, and most other vendors of RA and data cleansing technology already know, does... -
The Insider has been intrigued of late by the arguments and counter-arguments being bandied about regarding the virtues of fiber broadband network rollouts, especially the national variety. It appears that fiber is still the only commercially viable medium that has the ability to deliver the ever-increasing data requirements of internet and cloud usage in the foreseeable future. The European Union’s Digital Agenda commissioner, Neelie Kroes, believes so, and is doing all she can to ‘encourage’... -
A news story from Reuters today states that mobile data revenue is expected to jump 23 percent this year thanks to increased usage of smartphones and tablets, as the number of global mobile connections reaches 5.6 billion this year. Quoting research firm Gartner, it says that mobile data services revenue will total $314.7 billion this year, a 22.5 per cent increase from 2010, and added that, in four years, mobile data sales will reach $552 billion. In another stroke of reporting genius, the article... -
Rumors of the death of 'all you can eat' (AYCE) plans may be a little premature and the reasons for their imminent resurgence may surprise you. We all know that they were first introduced to encourage mobile subscribers to start utilizing the data capabilities of mobile networks. We also know that the take-up of data service via mobile devices was a little tardy until the advent of 3G 'dongles' connecting notebooks, and later by the introduction of the iPhone. The iPhone effect cannot... -
We are living in an age of ‘instantiality.’ Don’t bother looking up the word, it doesn’t exist, I just made it up. The Insider is grappling with an overload of sickening images and news of human tragedy that has been transmitted from Japan constantly and seconds after the big quake struck. It has been a week of ‘instant and constant reality’ via every form of communication we have at our disposal. We have all starting becoming used to the ‘instantiality’... -
The wrath of a government scorned seems to show no signs of abating as the U.S. launches what is tantamount to a witch-hunt in the ongoing WikiLeaks saga. Reports emanating from the NY Times , BBC and CNN claim the U.S. government has even subpoenaed Twitter in a bid to support an ongoing criminal investigation into whether WikiLeaks and people involved or connected to WikiLeaks, including an Icelandic member of parliament, broke the law. The order asks specifically for names of those attached to... -
What happens if a mobile network cracks under the strain of a ‘data tsunami’? This was one of the most hotly debated topics at the recent ‘Monetizing Bandwidth’ roundtable held at MW Americas last month. Although most attendees thought it was some way off, for one operator it has happened way sooner than expected, and the PR damage resulting from it has reached the equivalent of ‘8’ on the Richter scale. I don’t wish to exacerbate the problems already facing... -
If you are starting to tire from all the LTE hype going around and daily news of another LTE network activation then maybe it’s time for a reality check. I have always embraced new technology with glee but I am starting to have reservations about LTE and its real purpose. Now, I know that network equipment providers need to constantly innovate to keep selling products and I realize that our networks are being bombarded by data traffic, so those should provide good enough reason to roll out LTE. However... -
While CSPs worldwide grapple with how to monetize their services it appears that many ‘over the top’ or OTT players continue to grow their mobile revenues. Amazon.com is the latest to announce record results with generated revenues of $1 billion from mobile purchases during the last 12 months. CEO Jeff Bezos revealed this during the Amazon's Q2 earnings release, and stressed the importance of mobile phones and tablet computers in the company's future plans but he did not mention the role... | | Paid Advertisement | | | | | Copyright © 1988-2012, TeleManagement Forum.
