As William Shakespeare famously wrote – “that which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” Truer words have never been spoken but it’s clear old Bill never tried to procure cloud services because in this market, names can be deceiving. You might think you’re buying lavender but in reality you get stinkweed. This point kept coming back to me over and over last week while attending TM Forum’s Team Action Week in Lisbon. Almost every topic we discussed – Service Level Metrics, Procurement...

So a lady in Georgia last week logged onto Facebook from her mobile phone and ended up seeing confidential information for loads of other people. The reason given was an AT&T routing error . I still can’t quite understand why it isn’t a service security error but I’ll take their word for it. Two things come to mind. First, if you keep confidential information of Facebook or any other public site like that – you deserve to have your identity stolen. That’s like leaving your laptop in the front...

I almost fell out of my chair the other day when I saw references to 'over-the-top' cloud services. The author was speculating that telecom service providers will become "also rans" as providers of cloud services just as they lost the battle for playing a value added role in providing digital media/content services. I have to admit the thought never occurred to me. Like many, I felt that Telcos were being handed a gift in that they have so many natural advantages when it comes to...

With Orlando in the past and my swollen feet returning to normal size after walking 17 miles a day from one side of the hotel to the other, I wanted to share just a few of the many responses to TM Forum's Cloud Initiative and ECBC we announced last week. http://gigaom.com/2009/12/09/telcos-eye-the-cloud http://gigaom.com/2009/12/13/hedging-your-options-for-the-cloud/

Most of us have had the experience of travelling to acountry where we can’t speak the language and trying to function. Except for a few words like “please,”“thank you” and “where is a restaurant” we are filled with a mix of excitement, uncertainly and confusion. That pretty much sums up where users are with respect tocloud computing services these days. The brochure looks great but what’s the reality? And while there the list ofuncertainties and questions is lengthy, one of the most basic issues...

Any discussion ofcloud computing has to acknowledge that on one hand, it holds huge promisewhile on the other hand, is possibly the most over-hyped technology trend tocome down the pike in many a year. That aside, thepotential to save costs and gain flexibility in offering new services iscompelling. And between those two,my advice is to make the business case on the new service flexibility aspectsas most new technologies that promise significant costs savings end up notdelivering on that promise...

Was thumbing through a past issue of Network World and came upon a very good perspective on Cloud Computing. http://www.networkworld.com/columnists/2009/091509antonopoulos.html JIm

By now, most everyone has heard the the City of LA has decided to replace much of it's Microsoft and Novell apps with Google Apps. http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/telecoms/article6894607.ece While much of the talk has has centered around GMail, the deal in fact is much broader and encompasses all of the Google Apps that compete with Office and Novell's GroupWise. The most obvious issues involve security and quality of service and it's interesting to note...

Last night, I attended CloudCamp Atlanta event here in my home city. There were about a 120 people from across the ICT industrys, particularly developers, planners, and supplier from the general IT sector. From a supplier thought leadership perspective, the event's content was led by three companies: 1. Microsoft -- lead sponsor, and corporate evangel about Platform as a Service (PaaS) and the launch of Windows Azure 2. Canonical -- open-source software and support services for Ubuntu Linux 3...
