Exemplar Network: Dynamic Desktop
Introducing the first web programmable telecommunications network
This demo will show how operators can control and monetise their network bandwidth capabilities using web based interfaces. It will use the Exemplar network which was commissioned by the Irish Government to test and validate new revenue generating services and applications that can take advantage of the dynamic nature of a web enabled Network.

Business Proposition

Bandwidth demands on carriers’ networks are growing exponentially while revenues and profits are decoupled from the cost of delivering the network. Carriers will be able to respond to this challenge through service innovation and new revenue generating products. This demo will show how carriers can offer innovation and network monetisation via a programmable network API linked to the TMF MTOSI Services standards.

Customer Champion Quote

“Liquid bandwidth services will empower customers to purchase bandwidth when needed in a cost-effective and timely manner that closely tracks their real hour-by-hour and day-by-day bandwidth requirements with the comfort that the network can 'flex' to meet any unanticipated demands. It allows network operators to monetise these services and optimise revenues from its network investments. This Exemplar catalyst illustrates technology that can achieve these aims, allowing more creative commercial relationships with customers which better meets the vicissitudes of emerging traffic patterns and customer expectations.”

Demonstration Scenarios
Example
Description
Service Passes
Service Passes enable operators to introduce a new revenue stream by selling temporary, i.e. non-recurring, data plans. These plans provide access tightly defined by time, volume, speed, application or a combination of these factors. This enables liquid bandwidth operators to:
  • Sell access to its data services without a long-term contract
  • Highly segment offerings to meet individual subscriber needs for data access by, volume, speed, service and price
  • Offer data plans that provide real-time control of costs and usage

Example: A TV broadcaster who requests temporary bandwidth for a special event. The demo will show the broadcaster login to a services portal, get authentication, and arrive at a landing page to request the service and the period of time.
Cloud Bundled Services
Whether hosting applications, or providing platform or infrastructure as a service, operators require the abilty to create segment-relevant bundles and the flexibility to innovate with the business model for these offerings. Cloud Service Charging enables liquid bandwidth operators to:
  • Execute any payment transaction types: on-demand, subscription, set-up charges, recurring charge, and pre-paid
  • Create segment market offerings based on application and usage context: time-of-day, service tier, etc.
  • Flexibly bundle, price, and charge for services: by volume, by time, or by event as appropriate to support marketing-friendly business models

Example: a movie animation company wants to convert its work to 3D. They will be charged on the bundle of resources used i.e. cloud based server processing, storage and high speed bandwidth for the time they need.
