It’s summer in the Northern Hemisphere, and the holiday malaise is almost upon us, but the lead up to warmer climes has been anything but quiet. In this month’s Inside Revenue Management, almost every sector of the business end of a CSP is covered. I try to unravel the mysteries of those M2M revenues we are all being told are coming. Alex Leslie from BillingViews investigates the impact TV will play in our futures and who will be the players and revenues that may come with it. Telecom Asia’s John Tanner takes a journalist’s deep dive into the many innovative ways we can make mobile pay, and Movenbank’s Scott Bales reports on the highlights of a TM Forum panel on Mobile Payments at CommunicAsia held recently in Singapore. If that’s not enough, we also take a look at how and why direct operator billing is being embraced by smartphone users. Holiday reading, maybe?
Tony Poulos, Editor, Inside Revenue Management
There has been a lot of hype around what will be the next big revenue stream for CSPs. One area getting a lot of airplay is machine to machine (M2M) and most analysts have already come out with dramatic predictions as to the worth of that market – with numbers as high as $65 billion within a few years. Find out more in this analysis from Tony Poulos, Market Strategist, TM Forum.
With massive growth predicted in the pay-TV market – including cable, satellite and telco IPTV video services – the whole concept of TV needs to be reinvented. And according to Alex Leslie, Publisher of BillingViews, if the traditional players don't do it, then it will fall to others who will leave the MSOs and service providers in the dust.
Mobile payments are widely tipped to become a hot growth area for cellcos, and in some markets in Asia-Pacific it already is, from smartcard-based mobile wallet services in Japan and Korea to remittance payment services in Southeast Asia. But it's early days, and the mobile payment pie is going to get a whole lot bigger. Find out more in this look at the market from John C. Tanner of Telecom Asia.
Great news for mobile operators. A recent online consumer survey of more than 2,000 smartphone users showed a significant demand for director operator billing, which, despite being a relatively recently launched service for many operators, has become the preferred payment method of choice for apps and in-app purchases.
Asia's communications industry had its annual pinnacle event a few weeks ago, CommunicAsia in Singapore. Scott Bales, Chief Mobile Officer at Movenbank, was invited to share his thoughts as part of the Mobile Payments stream. The panel set out to tackle one of the most challenging questions in the Mobile Payments space today: How do you plan for success, and who is going to win in the long run? Read More

Delivering cost-effective mobile broadband services while facing extraordinary traffic growth means service providers must evolve their network architectures and associated operational models. Network designers, operators and their technology vendors are turning to heterogeneous network (hetnet) architectures to address the capacity crunch.
"I think we all understand that there is more innovation going on in the payment space than NFC, and it's not the only way forward at the intersection of mobile and payments. But why isn't it mass market yet?"
