From Hollywood to Bollywood, film studios are still raking in millions from showing the latest blockbusters at the cinema. However, a lot of consumers are choosing to stay home for their video entertainment – whether through their cable provider’s service or streaming online. We’re featuring articles on both sides of the video equation in this issue of Inside Track. We have the executive summary of a brand new Quick Insights report all about how cable MSOs can broaden their horizons (and revenues!) and also an article from Search Telecom on how traditional carriers can monetize the video content going over their pipes. Big issues for sure as more and more people decide to bring the movies home to their living rooms.

One of the high points of my Management World experience was participation in a discussion group of very senior managers, which included Nick Heller from Google. Nick was kind enough to share Google’s 9 Principles of Innovation.
For all the talk of cloud services and monetizing this or that – important things for CSPs and their suppliers and integrators to be concerned about – a lot of discussions at Management World 2011 centered around the twin concepts of simplification and standardization.
Telstra, Nokia Siemens Networks, Chunghwa Telecom and Huawei have scooped this year’s prestigious TM Forum Excellence Awards, which were announced last month in front of a packed audience of more than 3,500 senior executives from the communications and enterprise sectors at TM Forum’s flagship Management World 2011 conference in Dublin.
The past decade has seen more advances in technology than the previous century. The cable industry is right at the very heart of this with the deployment of new, fast technologies. But technology isn’t the only thing that is changing – the market is too. With Internet-based content rivals and IPTV offers, MSOs recognize future revenues are threatened and the need to broaden their income base. This Quick Insights report, authored by Mike Cansfield of ICT Analysis, discusses how these cable companies can expand revenue in the commercial sector.
The TM Forum Business Process Framework (eTOM) is recognized as providing significant benefits to organizations that can successfully align to the standard. The challenges that organizations face when deploying eTOM are the same for the adoption of many other standards: investment in time, investment in money, and ultimately, buy-in from the wider business. So when considering a modeling tool to help you deliver an eTOM initiative, it’s essential to bear in mind these barriers to ensure that you are giving yourself the best chance possible of reaping the benefits on offer. This article by Orbus Software is accompanied by a FREE eTOM STARTER PACK (including Visio Stencils, eTOM Introduction, Templates and Poster).
