Management World 2010

Defense Spotlight

May 18, 2010: 2.00pm - 5.30pm

Optimization using Standards and Policy Based Network Management (PBNM)

Standards and Policy Based Network Management (PBMN) are the key enablers to achieve mission critical outcomes under the constrained and often volatile operating conditions associated with Defense networks. The rapid build-out of 4G and satellite networks will bring new management challenges to Communications Service Providers, MSOs and Defense Agencies. The Defense Spotlight at Management World 2010 will highlight optimization and the TM Forum Standards that enable you to bridge communications across disparate networks and balance efficiency and security.

Hot topics include:
  • Challenges and opportunities of mobile broadband satellite communications
  • Using TM Forum frameworks and Standards to optimize network management efficiency
  • Policy Information Exchange, complex event processing and distributed policy execution applied in the context of the TM Forum Frameworx
  • Policy Based Network Management in the Cloud
Optimising Communication Efficiency through Standards Tuesday May 18, 2010 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm
Chair: Manuel Hermosilla, Chief Enterprise Architect, DOD
Integrating SATCOM and Spectrum Management into Standards-Based NetOpsThis presentation explains why integrating Satellite Communications (SATCOM) operations and management (O&M) into Global Information Grid (GIG) NetOps is essential for the unified situational awareness (SA) and rapid response capabilities needed to support mission assurance for net-centric operations. DISA's Integrated SATCOM Operations & Management (ISOM) Joint Capabilities Technology Demonstration (JCTD) promises to advance GIG NetOps in both the short- and long-term by addressing critical gaps in SA and resource allocation and utilization. SATCOM resources are uniquely limited in nature and optimized monitoring, reporting, and resource control are crucial to efficiency, effectiveness, and mission assurance. Managing SATCOM in a unified manner with other GIG resources and capabilities -- leveraging industry standard technologies, policy-based management, and service-oriented architecture -- enables maximal realization of 'commander's intent' and supports the objective of GIG convergence.
Speakers:
Sriram Chakrapani, Chief, Integration Engineering Division, DOD
Global Mobility & Broadband Communications on the MoveImagine the possibility of delivering mobile broadband satellite communications anywhere, anytime and anyhow. What standards must we refine to bridge communications across disparate networks? We have the technology to integrate various broadband network; now we need to work on standards, back-office operations and build the agreements and consortiums similar to those of the wireless heyday of the early 1990's. This presentation will focus on the challenges and opportunities of mobile broadband satellite communications.
Speakers:
Mike Turner, Program Manager, Boeing Broadband SatCom Network - BBSN, Boeing Company
Using TM Forum Standards in Defense Network ManagementThis presentation depicts usage of TM Forum frameworks and standards in a defense context in order to optimize network management efficiency. This will be investigated through integration and automation support insertion for defense communication and information systems, while taking into account specific security requirements.
Speakers:
Marc Gambert, Nework Architect, Thales Communications SA

PBNM & Autonomic BehaviorTuesday May 18, 2010 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm
Chair: Sriram Chakrapani, Chief, Integration Engineering Division, DOD
How to Slice the PIE? Policy Information Exchange, Complex Event Processing, and Distributed Policy Execution in an Autonomous WorldAs autonomous devices dramatically outnumber people on global broadband networks, a critical challenge for enterprises, CSPs, MSOs and defense agencies will be the balance between human control and network automation. The Policy Information Exchange (PIE) model, coupled with robust capabilities for complex event processing and distributed policy execution, and applied in the context of the TM Forum Frameworx, will be key enablers of the successful exploitation of network automation capabilities to achieve intended mission outcomes under often constrained and volatile operating conditions.
Speakers:
Bob Natale, Chief Engineer, Joint NetOps & Cyber Defense, MITRE
John Wilmes, Chief Technical Architect, Communications Sector, Progress Software
Defense Application of Policy Governance for Autonomic DevicesThis presentation discusses the need for oversight to be applied to autonomic devices where independent action can be taken by the device. We suggest a PbM framework to provide the context within which the independent actions of this class of device may be contained within a greater context (i.e. the enterprise) without burdening the device with an overload of environmental and/or operational information.
Speakers:
Kenneth Roberts, Managing Consultant, Detecon International
John Lowis, Managing Consultant Battlespace Service Management, Logica
Policy Based Network Management in the CloudWith networks extending to the cloud, enforcement of the appropriate management policies is becoming more and more difficult. This session will focus on the measures that can be taken, taking into account aggregation, correlation, pattern detection and governance.
Speakers:
Edwin Wilkeshuis, Customer Solution Architect, CA Technologies, Inc.
