 The Year Ahead: The Tipping Point for
Telecom |

Change may come slowly to telecom, but there are interesting trends afoot for 2008.

I’ve written a lot over the past year or two about the significant threats facing the telecom industry. But the rocks in the pond of convergence and the appetite of Web players aren’t just affecting telecom – in fact, telecom might be getting off lightly compared to some. Across many markets from insurance to advertising, the Web effect is really changing the way that markets operate, and in its wake it is creating winners and losers. Telecom has widely been predicted as a loser as it gets forced into bit carriage with all of the revenue going ‘over the top’. That’s still a very real scenario, but there still is life in the old dog. Telecom companies are listening and are reacting to change, and I’d say 2008 is probably the year in which we see all the past predictions either come to fruition or be laid by the wayside. |
