12.10  Service Provider IT (SPIT) strategy in support of a rapidly changing telco landscape
Alpna Doshi, CIO, Reliance Communication
SPIT strategy is based on the emerging understanding that the telco industry is undergoing major change, indeed transformation. Customer behaviour and consequently the enabling technologies, protocols & platforms have undergone change and are rapidly evolving. Caught up in this wave of industry transformation are end-user devices, business models, regulatory requirements and the proliferation of fascinating services delivered to the end-point, via VAS, device-specific OS and highly flexible charging & payment options. NGNs, NGOSS, fully-integrated SDPs are therefore at the bleeding edge of this trend.

This transformation is affecting the way Service Providers regard their traditional telco infrastructure, and their hitherto stable business strategy as far as the network was concerned. SPIT strategy acknowledges the commoditisation of network infrastructure, and focuses business attention on the IT technologies enabling services to end customer. With the network becoming a ubiquitous commodity, and the focus shifting to on-demand services delivered through the 'pipe', operators are having to radically re-think their plans for customer experience, applications development, tariffing, and the underlying infrastructure which delivers these to the end-point.

SPIT therefore acknowledges the importance of IT in the telco picture - as key to growth and profitability, as customer usage patterns continue to be influenced by leading-edge technology players - and vice-versa.The strategy focuses on IT as being the vehicle to carry traditional telcos into the future.

12.40  New Age Strategies for 3G Services in India
Ravinder Jain, CIO, Aircel
3G is all about high speed data and as a telecom operator, the massive investments have been done to get the spectrum and more investments will be done to create the infrastructure for rolling out services. Then, comes the monetization of these huge investment through innovative service offering. The theory that operator becomes the dump pipe and let the subscriber handles by smart internet content & application players does not work out well for an operator. Hence, the winning 3G strategy is a mix of ‘smart pipe’ and smart services. While creating global eco-system of partners is the essence for all service provider model, it is equally important to understand that personalised service experience will be the key differentiating factor to a winning strategy in post 3G scenario. Combination of both the strategy gives an edge to operator to become the dominant player in the complete service driven global economy, where communication systems is the backbone of connected society.
