How to use the SID. There are a number of modeling-related projects in the industry, such as the ITU-T’s search for an industry umbrella model and the mapping of the DMTF’s CIM model to the SID. Some models pre-date the SID, some post-date the SID, some are/were developed independent of the SID. Enterprises interested in adopting an industry “standard” model are presented with the challenge of “which model to use?”
The SID is being used by a number of TM Forum projects, including IP Network Management (IPNM, now part of the mTOP program), Multi-Technology OSS Program Service Management (mTOP-SM), and OSS through Java (OSS/J). IPNM has introduced a number of IP-related services to the SID by extending the SID. mTOP-SM and OSS/J have developed interfaces that enable interoperability. Each project has changed/extended the SID in some way. For projects that produce similar interfaces an enterprise is faced with the challenge of “which interface to use?” Enterprises are also asking the question “how can the SID business view be transformed into an implementation view?” Formal documentation of these projects does not provide an answer to this question. However, the teams focused on interfaces did develop an implementation view of the SID.
There are also a number of projects underway that are focused on helping answer two of these three fundamental questions. Two of the projects’ goals are to explain how the models and/or interfaces complement one another and to provide guidance on which model(s) and/or interfaces to use in a particular scenario.
Governance of the SID model falls within the control of the TM Forum. Changes from within the TM Forum are the result of contributions from members via a collaboration between members, teams, and the Change Control Board. From outside the TM Forum requests for changes are facilitated by the Industry Group Advisory Council. Contributions from external groups can be made by a TM Forum member on behalf of the external group. These change requests follow the same process as contribution from within the TM Forum
This document does not assume to document in detail the efforts of all these teams, but to provide a focal point that summarizes these efforts. It provides a summary of the model harmonization work that is underway. It provides a summary of techniques that can be applied to harmonize the SID with other models.
