TR156, Content & Digital Media Foundational Concepts, Release 1.0

Digital media content is big business for the communications industry today, as bit pipes are filling with over-the-top video traffic. For various types of Service Providers, content distribution continues to grow in operational scale and strategic importance. This growth occurs as network operators seek to compete for new services revenues beyond bit pipes and first generation “walled garden” IPTV.

The content value chain has many types of parties, perspectives, new products, and integration points to consider and manage at both business and technical levels, as communications services converge with content and consumer devices. Many industry specifications already exist, yet the industry lacks a collaborative framework and business architecture to effectively:

  • Manage and distribute content using shared operational investments across many types of content and communications services, and
  • Deliver competitive value to customers and partners with operational assurance

Efforts to monetize and manage content and distribution flows between the many parties of the content and communications value chains require a strong foundation of concepts to build upon.

The TM Forum Value Chains Content Project produced TR156 Content & Digital Media Foundational Concepts report in order to equip planning, product, and technical professionals to better collaborate by providing:

  • Models for integration requirements across parties, processes, and support systems in the value chain
  • An analysis of existing and reusable industry specifications
  • Direction and priorities that should be considered when applying and extending TM Forum Frameworx to the content value chain, including digital media and app stores

The information in this report can help TM Forum members to accelerate planning and development of competitive product and cost-effective operations solutions for digital media content services using TM Forum Frameworx, together with other industry specifications.
