Telecom Media Convergence

Convergence is about crossing multiple industries. No longer are companies confined to their own markets. Fixed, mobile, and IP service providers can offer content and media services, and equipment providers can offer services directly to the end user. Content providers are consistently looking for new distribution channels.

TM Forum’s Telecom Media Convergence team addresses the issues and challenges brought about by the convergence of communication services and media & broadcasting services. Its main goal is to ensure rapid response to OSS issues and to provide expert guidance to TM Forum working teams in the Telecom and Media service sector.

The first output of the team produced a technical report that pointed the market and technical forces enabling the convergence between content providers and service providers. The report identified collapse in the value chain and resulting possible emergence of eMedia Service Provider who integrates roles played in the past by the separate parties and new roles emerging in the chain.

The TMC is currently planning the next phase of work. At a minimum, they plan to identify operational changes and stipulate new operational models resulting from such value chain collapse. The TMC plans to focus on aspects of processing services such as content acquisition, storage, management and delivery and related functions such as Digital Rights Management or Intellectual Property Rights Management. Members interested in participating can self-subscribe to the Collaboration Workspace and contact the team leader.
