There is a common held belief that if telcos fail to monetize bandwidth adequately they will be relegated to the realms of becoming a ’dumb pipe’ provider. Once that level is reached it is assumed that they would become a mere wholesaler of network access and forget about the foibles and added cost of maintaining those fickle retail customers who are hell-bent on purchasing OTT products. Just now there is no option but to continue to persevere with the retail sector and all the challenges... -
Whilst the world’s leading journalists pontificate on the damage Amazon’s Kindle Fire will cause Apple, Google, Android, RIM, et al, The Insider is more worried about the damage it could do to the telecoms industry. For those of you that have managed to avoid all the press on the subject let me summarize that Amazon has just released a veritable arsenal of color Kindles, one thinly disguised as a tablet, set to blow the market apart. With the Kindle Touch (starting at $99), a regular... -
“Over-the-top (OTT) providers could capture as much as 16 per cent of mobile voice revenue in the next five years.” This fascinating headline caught The Insider’s eye and made him wonder if anyone really cared. It was linked to a press release from Analysys Mason promoting one of their reports , but with voice revenues declining steadily for CSPs you’d wonder why they would be concerned with losing percentage of what is fast becoming a commodity item. Another article sighted... -
There’s something strange happening in the US cable industry that may have relevance to our ongoing OTT (over-the-top) player concerns in telecoms. Ever-vigilant TM Forum contributor, John Wilmes, pointed The Insider to an interesting report that the US pay-TV industry lost nearly 200,000 subscribers in the second quarter. It seems they just disappeared! Ryan Lawler, writing for Gigaom , presented figures showing a net loss of 193,000 subscribers, and while losses by cable providers are nothing... -
Are we seeing the beginning of a fightback from ISPs tired of carrying heavy traffic loads from ‘over-the-top’ freeloaders, or is it just a case of ‘smoke and mirrors’. The first volley came from Comcast aimed at Level 3, one of the largest Internet backbones in the world, demanding a fee from them to deliver Internet video to Comcast subscribers. Now it appears France Telecom ISP, Orange, has caught on wanting to charge file-sharing site, Megaupload, for delivering bandwidth... -
While CSPs worldwide grapple with how to monetize their services it appears that many ‘over the top’ or OTT players continue to grow their mobile revenues. Amazon.com is the latest to announce record results with generated revenues of $1 billion from mobile purchases during the last 12 months. CEO Jeff Bezos revealed this during the Amazon's Q2 earnings release, and stressed the importance of mobile phones and tablet computers in the company's future plans but he did not mention the role... -
The world’s news portals are awash with stories about electronic book readers (eReaders), tablet PCs and a top-secret device, supposedly called the iSlate, coming from Apple. So strong are the Apple rumours that competitors have been rushing their own iSlate killers onto the market in anticipation. At the recent CES extravaganza in Las Vegas where all the new gizmos come out, even Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, joined the bandwagon flashing, ever so briefly, a tablet thing from HP. Not that anybody... | | Paid Advertisement | | | | | Copyright © 1988-2012, TeleManagement Forum. All Rights Reserved | | | | | |
