Linking Strategic Initiatives to Developer Best Practices

Share |

I spend a lot of time on this blog talking about the important strategic decisions that the industry has to make.  However, strategic decisions are not much use without having the developers within your company fully aligned to the strategy in their implementation approaches.  To this end the Forum has been looking at how we link the developers to the strategic decisions, and has decided to create a developer network that provides the technical documentation, knowledge and access to expertise, to guide developers and IT professionals to deliver rapid, high-quality solutions based on TM Forum Frameworks.

Traditionally the TM Forum has focused its technical standards initiatives on supporting process engineers and enterprise architects, but increasingly as the Forum standardises interfaces and data model implementations, it is critical that we inform and educate the developer community on how to use Forum standards and where to go to ask questions regarding implementation best practice.  The Developer Network was soft launched this year, and provides all relevant content for developers embarking on development of standards and interfaces.

I'd encourage all of our member companies to ensure that their developers engage with the Developer Portal and community, to make the most of this unique opportunity to be part of a vibrant community of developers which in turn will help them with faster/smoother implementation of strategic standards.

Martin, the development of best practice guidelines for standard developers is a hot topic. Several other initatives are surfacing, e.g. the IBM Standards for standards and the BSI PAS 98 Code of practice. However, while proponents of such ideas and methods to rank SSOs based on set critera argue that it will facilitate choosing "the right" standards, opponents argue that market dynamics will ensure that ultimate consumer needs are fulfilled, and standards are successful due to compliance with such needs. On April 29 (4 pm GMT) Talkstandards.com will host an open forum on Reviewing SSOs-Fostering or Impeding Efficient Standardization? where these issues will be discussed (event link: www.talkstandards.com/reviewing-ssos). I welcome your input on the forum! //Mattias Ganslandt
