The evolving iPhone business model

Share |
Last week I questioned whether the iphone business model was doomed.  I didn't have many supporters for my view, but today I read that Appcity have struck a deal with Apple that enables them to sell iPhone applications.  Not only that, but they seem to have convinced Apple to participate in an "All the apps you can eat" model!  Now this is real business model evolution!!

So perhaps the days of the iPhone being an island product in the sea of the mobile content world are coming to an end - far sooner than I had expected!  Will the next stop be Apple bringing the operators into the revenue stream?

I'm glad you brought this up Martin. I wanted another excuse to blow your old 'lack of business model argument' apart. News emanating from Australia is that the iPad is starting another revolution. Fans of the latest technology aren't the only ones rushing to be seen with an iPad. Marketers around the country are scrambling to launch apps that will capture their target audience's imagination and secure valuable real estate on customers' screen of choice.

It has also has been reported that companies in the US are paying newspapers and magazines up to five times as much to place ads in their iPad apps as compared to similar advertising costs on regular websites.

Looks like that business model is extending out even further than we expected and an ecosystem around Apple is actually developing.

Bad news... I did some digging into Appcity and they don't have authorization to sell an all you can eat plan from iTunes. They are just a normal affiliate receiving a 5% sales commission. You'll notice that the app links on Appcity go straight into iTunes leaving the purchase and distribution of the apps firmly within Apple's control.

I think the reporter in the linked story just read too much into the Appcity press release.
