Linking Smart Grid, Smart Money and Spaceships

Share |
I have to say that I'm a bit jealous of Elon Musk.  For those of you who never heard of him, he's the man who set up PayPal a number of years ago and became fabulously wealthy on the back of that bit of visionary entrepreneurship.....but thats not why I'm jealous of him.  He has since gone on to found Tesla Motors, who are manufacturers of electric roadster cars and is the chairman of Solarcity, which is a renewable energy provider for those same electric cars.  Now while that generates a bit of envy, particularly as he gets to be chief designer of these next generation roadsters, its still not the main reason I'm jealous of him.   No the real reason I'm jealous is that he's also the founder and chief designer of SpaceX, which is putting low cost launch vehicles into space, and successfully launched one into orbit last week.  What red-blooded engineer doesn't dream of desinging cool new cars and spaceships!!

So whats the connection to the TM Forum?  Well, over the last couple of years I've become increasingly convinced that success in this rapidly changing world depends on Service Providers and vendors finding the linkages between seemingly disparate topics.  And in the TM Forum we have begun to help our members make some sensible linkages between communications, smart grids, Cloud, advertising and smart money.  And every week I'm seeing more and more companies that are finding practical ways to expand and redesign their product offerings to embrace these new potential markets.

But as of yet, I still can't work out the linkage to spaceships!!  I'd love to hear from Mr. Musk how that linkage works....and in the meantime I'll just continue to be jealous.

I think the connections are in convergence of services (communications, computing and consumer devices). The electric cars require about 4 hours of charging to drive about 50 miles - too much waiting time to go too little distance! The new kind of Service Providers are required who can monitor the charge on car battery and direct to the nearest service where the battery can be exchanged for a fully charged one. The service would have a solar farm to keep charging the batteries while sun shines from a clean and renewable source of energy!
