It seems The Insider is not the only one ‘frightened by Facebook’. You may recall reading about his fears way back in March of this year, but it now seems others are feeling the same way. In an article published over the weekend in Australia’s ‘National Times’, deputy editor Julian Lee spared no punches in his assessment of Facebook’s growing power as an information gatherer. He wrote, “If Facebook was a government agency, its power would be as undisputed... -
It has been a few weeks since Google+ appeared and was made available to a selected number by special invitation from Google itself. Not surprisingly, the Insider was not one of them. It appears that those taking up the ‘challenge’ were able to invite others and within weeks the number of Google+ users has reportedly swelled to 20+ million in just three weeks. As Google’s answer to Facebook, Google+ exhibits many remarkably similar traits and, as one would hope, avoids many of the... -
So Google has come up with its own Facebook killer, Google+. Let’s hope, for Google’s sake, that it is more popular than some of its more recent flops like Google Wave. Let’s also take into account that News Corp has finally unloaded the once doyen of social sites, Myspace, at a considerable loss. Early reports state that Google+ is a worthy competitor to Facebook but who in the world wants another big social networking portal to contend with. Sites like Facebook, once thought of... -
It’s not often that leading figures from one industry care to enter the inner sanctum of another to lay out some home truths. It happened twice this week in Dublin at TM Forum’s Management World and it got The Insider thinking. Uber-successful serial entrepreneur, Nick Ogden , when discussing how the payments and banking world were addressing mobile market, suggested that telcos may have ‘missed the boat.’ Apart from a limited number of scattered initiatives at national level... -
The rumor mill has been running overtime this last week in the telecoms industry. Perhaps the most prominent, and certainly the most vocal are those claiming that Skype is about to be acquired - AGAIN! You will remember back in October 2005 that Skype’s private shareholders enjoyed a big payout when Skype was first bought over by eBay in a deal worth approximately $2.6 billion, plus potential ‘performance-based consideration.’ In September 2009 , in a deal that valued Skype at ... -
Consumers now have a voice through social networking, and it can be a very loud voice indeed. Any industry that ignores its power, including the telecoms industry, does so at its own peril. Just as social networking is playing an ever-increasing role in national uprisings and social unrest, as seen in countries like Egypt most recently, it is also being used effectively as a conduit for exposing customer concerns. The viral nature of sites like Facebook and Twitter means that a complaint or gripe... -
Facebook is hot, but The Insider is going cold on it. Maybe it’s an age thing, but the buzz has waned to the point of disinterest. News that almost half the UK population now uses Facebook , 30 million, is mind-boggling. What is even more daunting is that more than half of them use Facebook daily. Haven’t they got better things to do? It’s not just the UK. France is reporting 20 million users and Italy 16 million. No wonder businesses are now jumping on board trying to attract the... -
The wrath of a government scorned seems to show no signs of abating as the U.S. launches what is tantamount to a witch-hunt in the ongoing WikiLeaks saga. Reports emanating from the NY Times , BBC and CNN claim the U.S. government has even subpoenaed Twitter in a bid to support an ongoing criminal investigation into whether WikiLeaks and people involved or connected to WikiLeaks, including an Icelandic member of parliament, broke the law. The order asks specifically for names of those attached to... -
Facebook fully launched its “ Places ” location-based service (LBS) this week for its 500 million and growing downstream base of users. What does this news mean to CSP LBS in terms of new services business growth potential? First, it uses a product design pattern that should be considered in CSP’s LBS products. Second, it is yet another web-based over-the-top (OTT) service bypassing potential CSP value beyond internet pipe connectivity. Third, it’s got a cool API for developers that CSP IT architects... -
This week Facebook crossed the 500 million registered users for the social network. I’m personally spending more time communicating with friends on this network, and less time communicating by voice and addressed messaging. The number of third-party apps and content providers on Facebook’s web platform are growing rapidly. The platform delivers over 500,000 third-party apps from the cloud, with over 1 million external websites integrated with Facebook’s own web services. An important linkage connects... | | Paid Advertisement | | | | | Copyright © 1988-2012, TeleManagement Forum. All Rights Reserved | | | | | |
