Interesting article on the potential of M2M to grow to a $1.2trillion market by 2020 I like the " Connected life " phrase they are using. Much more along the lines of how I see the future industry than the phrases we have been using for the past couple of years - such as "Telco 2.0" . This goes far beyond anything that old Telco can do by itself, and even viewing the opportunity through the lens of Telco is fatally flawed. This new services industry is all about understanding... -
Over the past week I have been talking to a lot of people about how Operators can fight back against the constant erosion of their position in the new services market. Operators have moved from being the entity that created and delivered the service, to the entity that provides the pipes along which the services are delivered. This over-the-top challenge is nothing new and is something that has been talked about for the past 24 months. But it is becoming clear that the operators re-engagement in... -
Facebook fully launched its “ Places ” location-based service (LBS) this week for its 500 million and growing downstream base of users. What does this news mean to CSP LBS in terms of new services business growth potential? First, it uses a product design pattern that should be considered in CSP’s LBS products. Second, it is yet another web-based over-the-top (OTT) service bypassing potential CSP value beyond internet pipe connectivity. Third, it’s got a cool API for developers that CSP IT architects... -
“Often better late than never,” I’m told. After a week’s vacation, a US holiday, and a trans-Atlantic round trip for the forum, I confess I’m late on this blog post by a business day. The post being late got me thinking about how most CSPs are late on something important too… seriously competing in the business models of the web. But, I assert again, often better late than never. While I was on vacation, one of our contributing members Alcatel-Lucent acquired the online dwelling place of many western... -
Last week, we explored 2 themes in the retail/wholesale strategy discussion , which were 1) distribution, and 2) enabling services. We continue the exploration today focusing on enabling services. On a brief side road, I wanted to share my thanks and enthusiasm for those members and guests who attended Management World 2010 in Nice this week. Despite the ash cloud scare on Monday in the UK and Netherlands, we had the best event ever in Nice with over 3,000 attendees. What made it such a great event... -
When looking out over corporate strategy horizon for communications service providers (CSPs), an important question keeps surfacing: should CSPs be focused on retail, wholesale, or both types of business models? What do answers mean to members of TM Forum and the pursuit of new business models and services? Let’s briefly examine a general definition of retail and wholesale communications business models. Retail has traditionally meant the CSP acquires and manages a direct business relationship with... -
A quite innovative communications business model is emerging in Singapore. At an industry event last week I saw some very interesting presentations on the government led initiative to provide an open access, common communications infrastructure that could be used by multiple service providers. Two independent companies are being set up - one call Netco will be responsible for putting in place a core transport network, while the other called Nucleus Connect will be responsible for setting up the full... -
I see that the FCC reads our blogs! A couple of weeks ago I bemoaned the naked commercial tactics of Apple blocking Google Voice from its App store ( What’s good for the goose is good for the gander ) and hey presto, the FCC pops up and calls in the case ( read more ). Perhaps this issue has opened the FCC’s eyes to that fact if we’re going to have a debate about an open mobile web; it’s not just the mobile service providers who need to be bound up with net neutrality legislation... -
I saw recently that there is speculation that Apple is going to go into competition with PayPal by producing their own multi-purpose payment system. This would allow the iTunes and App store payment system to be applied to a wider range of participating products across the web. I'm not sure why this seems to have been greeted with shock and surprise by the industry. It is after all a logical move to further improve the return on investment they have made, and hints at a future where the enabling... -
It’s a little known fact that Verizon Wireless used the Beatles song All Together Now in commercials in 2002. So it was interesting to read the words of a current Verizon executive, Jeannie Diefenderfer, vice president of global network operations (NYSE: VZ) in Telephony Online this week talking about “coopetition” – or cooperation among competitors – as a key attribute for successful telecom operations. “ I believe in today’s world, and more so going forward... | | Paid Advertisement | | | | | Copyright © 1988-2012, TeleManagement Forum.
