    eTOM & BSS processes

    Hi everyone,

I’m starting to map on eTOM processes concerning my Business Support System (BSS) area.

These processes are mainly about design, supporting, improvement and enhancement of systems and platforms.

    1.       I’ve considered as a possible solution to map them in the Strategy Infrastructure & Product, especially in the Infrastructure Lifecycle Mgt and Product Lifecycle Mgt . What do you think about that?

    2.       Furthermore, to consider which kind of processes those systems  and platforms are supporting, I was thinking about mapping  other areas  of the eTOM framework. Do you think it could be a possible solution? Do you have any other suggestion?

Item 1 is OK, but for item 2 what is it that you are looking for as the deliverable?

Typically in the work that we have carried out we map the processes that we are looking to build/improve using eTOM as an assurance framework. Once the processes are defined and aligned, we then associate the supporting system functions to the activities that they support.

Are you using a tool to do the mapping or an MS Office product?

    Regards

    Re: eTOM & BSS processes

For the item number 2, the answer is yes. As the BSS system and process mapping will touch much more then just SIP. which of the eTOM process it will touch will more depend upon what extent of mapping you are looking at in the BSS system. For example, if you are looking for taking the revenue report and trand to take call on product life cycle, it will touch PLM but also Billing in Operatoins.

    re: 1

Processes to design, improve and enhance systems / platforms are primarily handled by Resource Capability Delivery (RCD).  Processes to maintain / support existing platforms are handled in Resource Development and Retirement - see "Assess Performance of Existing Resources" and "Manage Resource Development".

Remember from the perspective of eTOM that all network infrastructure, IT systems and hardware are considered to be "Resources".

Configuration of existing systems and processes to support new product / customer / billing classses, etc could potentially be handled by CRM Support and Readiness although this is probably something of a grey area.  It probably depends on the nature of the change and the group (IT or business) that gets involved.

You should probably seek some clarification depending on your specific requirements.
