This is a new cloud catalyst project has just been approved for Dublin 2012 and future, named "Cloud Federation and Accessibility Intensive Platform" catalyst. China Unicom and China Telecom both are project champions. We are looking for participants if it can attract you.

This catalyst is intended for telecom operator to orchestrate and bridge among multiple cloud services, which may be in different form, like private resource, cluster and public cloud, etc.

It will provide cloud user enhanced accessibility, adaptability for different application based on the nature of them. The intended user includes enterprises or consumers.

Furthermore this project will position itself to facilitate the customer in controlling their application and service deployed in cloud resource, in consequence to stimulate the adoption of cloud business model by the industry.

For Dublin 2012, we propose to demonstrate a concept of this platform with unified and trusted cloud service delivery and management. The basic features may include:

- User-friendly interface for cloud service subscription, deployment and management, shielding the complexity of different APIs
- SLA monitoring, reporting and management, cloud billing, identity management, Cloud Service inventory management
- Single Sign On functionality supported
- Outsourcing for cloud computing resource potentially.

The benefit for Telecom Operator to well position itself in cloud value chain, to make use of this advantage, i.e. being trusted, reliable, Telecom operator will benefit from the cloud service brokerage deployment in the following ways:
- Providing intensive E2E cloud service offering, assurance and billing,
- Enabling value-add services to satisfy general and specific end user’s needs
- Expanding revenue possibilities.

With more IDCs (Internet Data Centre) emerge, cloud services are foreseen to proliferate at exponential rate. For IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, Cloud Broker is also the critical component in taming the emerging operation challenge.

From end user’s perspective, it is beneficial for them to subscribe and manage multiple cloud services from different providers.

The Frameworx and other TM Forum standards are used in this project with the following perspectives:
- Order, provisioning, billing from eTOM/SID/TAM
- Capacity model from SID
- Product Catalog from SID/TAM
- SLA from eTOM/SID/TAM
- Cloud Billing whitepaper

DMTF standards such as CIMI could be used to construct cloud service integration, cloud service management, message exchange, and etc.

We expect to enhance the relevant Frameworx standards and cloud SLA/Billing guild book, to create connection between TMF cloud and DMTF cloud standards from different business view in one project.

If your company is interested in this project, please send an email to Jerry Zhu at jerryzhu@huawei.com as soon as possible.

Call for Speakers: 3rd-Party Billing Panel @MW Dublin

Hi! We are in need of two more panelists for a session at Management World Dublin regarding Third-Party Billing.
In reviewing the charter, I felt the analysis required to properly scope and prioritize the current work recommendation is pretty complex.

I'm attaching a contribution to this post. This contribution attempts to position related industry Cloud SLA work in relation to work recommendation in the joint DMTF/TMF white paper. It also outlines key considerations required to derive a focused, value-added and feasible plan for the next 6-month.

The contribution is in no way complete but wanted to give people adequate time to review and come back with inputs/suggestions for this Thursday's discussion.

Please get me in the attendance list of the minutes.
I think we discussed a lot about the E2E process on the value chain.
About the wholesale-resale scenerio, my suggest here is all the relationship between SPs need to be constrained using comercial SLA which could possibly represent a wholesale product. The interaction between SPs need to be defined around this SLA , and FAB interaction
facing end customer are also carried out but only in the CRM horizontal domain(market/sales/product/customer associated). Fine-grained capability decomposition associated with service /resource and their specifcation are only shown internally in SPs. SPs need
to map the inside and outside operation internally to decompose and integrate their capabilities from S/P and finally satisfy their customer. Based on this , responsibilty boundary could be defined more clearly without too much complexity.

Hope this make sense.

Different with Cloud provider that offers IaaS for example as a business model to enterprise. They doesn't have risk on their sensitive data , hence ensuring security for their customer data.

Small to medium scale enterprises that needs to run their business but don't want to invest cost on infrastructure tends to use public Cloud to the Cloud provider (e.g. promotional portal, company profile ,etc).

So, we must choose wisely which delivery models and service models that really fit with our business model in terms of continuity, security, reliability, accessibility, and managebility

End-to-End Cloud SLA Management Project Charter Available for Review

Everyone:

When we are talking about Cloud Computing, its very important that we do not use it as a generic term but rather keep in mind the interlocking of multiple dimensions - e.g the Delivery Models (Private, Public, Hybrid, Community), the Service Models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS) & the Characteristics (On Demand, Broad Network Access, Resource Pooling, Rapid Elasticity and Measured Service). Now if you mix and match e.g. build a Private Cloud Solution and offer SaaS that has On Demand and Rapid Elasticity as key Characteristics, then definitely it becomes more secure (since its Private On Premise), bound by Geography (residing in a specific region) with the added benefits of faster go to market (since your software is now hardware independent as virtualization is one of the building blocks of cloud). A very important aspect of Architecting a solution is keeping all the perspectives in mind and applying the right trade-offs and come up with most cost-effective & specific solutions. So far as I understand, Public Cloud in the long term will be used by the 'Long Tail' and big CSPs who has already invested in large data centers will go for the Private Cloud.

This group relates to the expansion of the Carrier activities, functions and how they relate to other actors. Recommendations and models are planned for delivery during the June 4-6 workshop in DC.

I offered to encourage participation from TM Forum and others in this regard.

Carrier participation will be of course appreciated and your organization does not need to necessarily offer Cloud Provider services, since the major point of discussion is specific Carrier capabilities/ functions. Others of course welcome contribute to this NIST activity and perhaps contribute to refining and expanding other actor roles.

TM Forum member participation will be vary valuable to have a voice in this next set of NIST models.

I am also contacting ITU and other Carrier players to provide direction and input.

Some of you are aware that this has been a major concern that I and others have had, therefore, the NIST interest regarding clarification of Carrier and other roles are very exciting and will contribute to improving cloud model perspectives.

Text from NIST pertaining to this "goal"

"In the current NIST Reference Architecture document, the discussion contained within is very focused on the roles and responsibilities of the cloud provider. The four other roles were not studied to a similar depth. Therefore, inclusions of a fuller description of their responsibilities and the activities/functions they will perform is necessary to attain a more complete description in the NIST RA. For example, cloud carrier may provide additional services that are needed by the Cloud Consumer and Cloud Provider."

many thanks for your thoughts.
I think you're absoilutely right, that more integrated root-cause-anaylsis and more integrated problem handling in general is an important perspective for cloud.
In particular for customer facing services that are composed of multiple atomic services from different providers, this will be a huge challange.
Best,

Thanks for initiating discussion but I'd like to take one step back and see where and how cloud differs from non-cloud services? In all flavours of cloud we may see that actually we are delivering same service with single customer with today's process in more controlled infrastructure. The complexity that gets added due to cloud is more around multi-tenancy, governance, security and disaster recovery etc. Therefore any new impact that may come to existing T2R processes may be coming on these perspectives Adding to the list is more actors and providers to provide End to End service i.e. inter-provider issues may be more now. One more use case can come from customer perspective. In telecom world also customer had role to create problem in service like handset setting change, broadband unplug, power down, virus attack on routers etc but in cloud potential sources of problem generating elements at user end will be higher, depending on kind of service. Therefore I expect cloud to cause more stress towards integrated Root Cause Analysis (IT+Telecom+Security) than original telco driven processes and low level processes may have additional steps to integrate trouble tickets and validate same across provider, technology to come up with cause of problem.

Will try to find specific use cases in due course of time and egarly waiting for outcome of workshop that will help me to learn more.

Thanks & Regards
