This sounds like a good opportunity to potentially use TM Forum's IPDR usage data standard for moving of SilverLight framework designed and captured analytics data from a distributed SilverLight client to the analytics data collection/mediation back end in the cloud.

When it comes to monetizing new content delivery applications, user interface analytics is vital to any application deployment. Web based application analytics tools depend on interactions at the HTML page level. This dependency can be easily broken with new deployment scenarios.

Microsoft is now enabling consistent application and user analytics for applications running either inside or outside of the browser, even in offline mode. Microsoft Silverlight Analytics will let designers and developers visually build analytics into their Silverlight applications using Microsoft's Expression Blend.

This technology is being used within the Dynamic Content Delivery WAVES Catalyst to be shown at Management World 2010.

The Silverlight Analytics Framework is open source, and will be available on Codeplex.

Looking to get started with TM Forum Frameworks?

For my next series of blogs I will focus on a number of key TM Forum products that you should familiarise yourself with, if you are looking to get started with TM Forum Best Practises and Standards. So while some of the detail for some of our products may not be relevant to developers, I will focus on the “getting started” versions of these, so that you will gain contextual information and a flavour of what our Best Practises and Standards are all about.

The first in this series will be TR155, Solution Frameworks Statement of Direction, Release 1.1

Release 1.1 is a fix release which addresses many of the comments and feedback received during the Expert Review and Member Evaluation Period. Refer to the Document History section for details.

The document will outline how the landscape of the industry is changing, including IP infrastructure and Service Oriented Architecture.

Implementing the SOA OSS-J Inventory Web Service - Starting from WSDL

This week we create the OSSJ Web Service directly from the WSDL using NetBeans. We take a look at the generated classes and implement the create and get entity operations.

The process of creating a Web Service from a WSDL is called a top down approach and is quite fundamental in SOA design patterns. The idea is to generate the Java artefact's from the specifications not the other way around ! The specifications are the WSDL, the XML schema's for the Requests and Responses and the XML schema for our domain model.

We first download the JVTInventorySession.wsdl wsdl from the OSS J web site and save it to a local folder.

Then we add the schema file of our business entities (from our last blog) to that same folder. We name that schema file Entities.xsd.

The Entities.xsd contains the definitions of our business entities (domain model):

Because we import the Entities.xsd in our wsdl we are sure that when we create the Web Service from wsdl the JAXB classes for our Equipment and PhysicalTerminationPoint will also get created.

Now let's see in details how to create the Web Service from the wsdl in NetBeans.

First within NetBeans select File->New Project ->Java Web->Web Application and name your

application WebApplication. Keep the defaults. Click finish.

Now right click on your WebApplication and select New->Web Service from WSDL...

In the popup dialog name your Web Service InventoryWebService and browse to the local folder to import the JVTInventorySession.wsdl. Use invws for the package name. Click finish and wait.

NetBeans generates a couple of classes for us !

First the WebService endpoint skeleton called InventoryWebService.java.(in the source tree) and

(in the Generated-Source) the JAXB mapping classes for all the types used in our Web Service. This include the different Request and Response types as well the Entity types.

For example the Equipment.java JAXB class in the com.osswave.xml.inv.v1_5 package.

The InventoryWebService.java skeleton file is where we provide the implementation code for the Web Service. We use the JAXB mappings within our Web Service skeleton to create the implementation for all the operations.

We delegate all the persistency related operations to a simple Repository class.

Our first implementation of the Repository is in memory and is Map based. Later on I will show you how to implement it using JPA and Hibernate.

Let's implement the create entity operation. The code in the createEntityByValue(...) operation in the skeleton does retrieve the entity to be created from the request parameter, print its type it and delegate the rest of the creation to our simple repository. Finally we return the response.

Now let's implement the get entity by key operation. We do this by filling the code for the getEntityByKey(...) operation in the skeleton. We retrieve the entity key from the request parameter, then get our entity from our simple repository , populate the response with our entity and then return the response.

Implementing the SOA OSS-J Inventory Web Service

This blog is for the developers of OSS TMF applications. It is for you the developers who understood all the specifications (well maybe…) and need to develop some real applications with real code ! This is a developer for developer blog. We will talk about the Java code, JAX-WS, XML , WSDL, JMS , the problems of using JAXB with polymorphism, the beauty of Spring and Hibernate and all the rest ! Please feel free to come up with questions , comments and critiques we will all learn from that.

We will start with a series of articles on the implementation of the Inventory Web Service. I will show you how to implement the Web Service stack on a simple information model. As we go I will also show you how the Inventory API is structured around a couple of OSS Design Patterns. Our first Inventory Web Service implementation will be EJB based and then we will migrate it to Spring.

You will need a basic knowledge of the OSS-J Inventory API, XMLSchema, WSDL and JAX-WS. You will also need NetBeans, an XML Editor of your choice and soapUI (a Web Services Testing tool). The Inventory API specification is available from the TMF OSS-J site.

If you’re not familiar with XML Schema I suggest you read Wrox BeginningXML, 4th Edition. Also the XML Schema Element and Attribute Reference available for free from their site. And for programming JAX-WS the best book for me is SOA Using Java Web Services (this is what I use in my training classes ).

The first thing to know is that the OSS-J Inventory API is information model agnostic. What does that mean? It means that the API is not bound to a particular data model. It does mean that the API MUST be used in a polymorphic way. You have to supply a concrete information model and bind it to the hooks that exist in the API. Polymorphism means that the same basic entity may take multiple forms and the OO software can deal with that. From a Java perspective we use inheritance from a base class and from an XML Schema perspective we extend from a base type by using the complexContent construct. This way the operations relative to the base class can be performed on the extended entities.

Let's define a simple inventory data model. We will do that directly in XML Schema. Keep in mind we’re using a top down approach so we won’t start from Java we start from XML and WSDL. There are very good reasons why SOA architectures should always start from XML and WSDL but that’s anotherdiscussion. For this week blog will start by defining the XML schemas for two very simple data model entities (later on we will use a more sophisticated SID compliant IP-VPN model thanks to John Reilly!).

Our minimal data model will only contain two entity types. They are part of our resource model (no associations or specifications or events for this week!). We will name the two entities: Equipment and PhysicalTerminationPoint. Also we will need something to identify our entities. In OSS-J this identifier is named a key. Keep in mind that this is not a database key ! The Inventory API uses a polymorphic primary key to address the issue of having multiple vendor entity identification mechanisms. Our primary key is named InfoModelEntityPrimaryKey.

Not Another App Store!

There is nothing in the SID for use cases but in answer to your question, the current approved SID 8 model files are at http://www.tmforum.org/DocumentsInformation/35505/article.html?linkid=35505. Note that SID 9 will be out for member review this week and should be approved a month or so later.

For RSM use you would download the “RSM zip file” from the above URL, which will appear as SID_Phase_VIII_RSM_v1dot0dv0_0_1.zip. Start a new modeling project in RSM, but don’t check “Create new model in project”. Select the new project, then File..Import from General…Archive File, browse to or paste in the zip file name, expand the left side and click Select All, then uncheck the five files on the right and click Finish. That’s it.

I'm interesting in installing the latest, stable version of the SID models into my installation of IBM RSM for some use case modeling. Is there a how to guide for a newbie developer on how to do this?

Service Providers Sharing Service Implementations

This week saw Portugal Telecom / Sapo make a significant contribution to the TM Forum by way of sharing their Sapo Services Bus. The presentation (including code stubs), covers the Big Picture, the Current State of play, Architectural diagram, Solution Overview, Service Lifecycle and Governance for the Services Bus used by Sapo, the major web presence in Portual.
