Thanks for that clarification. You should be aware that industry/vertical specific Service Specifications and associated Service Definition schemas are controlled by the applicable user community body for that sector. In the case of DOCSIS, Cable Laboratories is the controlling body. You should take this up with them and they will probably ask you to submit an ECR to add some optional fields to the schema.

Need to know about how IPv6 is supported in IPDR. AFAIK, IPv6 address is represented as a whole (128 bits) in IPDR template fields (like CmIpv6Addr, CmtsIpv6Addr).

Want to know whether can we get IPv6 prefix for the respective associated CM/CPE and which attribute carries this info in IPDR templates.

In need of urgent in this information. Would be great if anyone throw some lights on this.

Is anyone aware of an implementation, Open Source or commercial, complete or partial, I can get started with?

Sitaraman,

I don't think it is supported. My understanding is that soaML introduces a specific profile with specific stereotypes.
These would need to be supported first at SID level and then at JOSIF level.

Here is what I suspect…

I don’t know what IDL to Java compiler they are using but the problem appears to be in their compilation include path; it cannot find the CosNotification.idl file in the OMGidl directory that is part of the MTNM idl distribution. They need to ensure that their compiler is picking up all the files in the OMGidl directory.

Also a word of advice, the OMG files that are part of the MTNM distribution, were only provided so that we could compile the IDL in order to generate the IDL documentation, they are not meant for actual implementation. When compiling the IDL for a real implementation they need to use the CORBA notification files that are part of the actual 3^rd party Notification Service that they are using.

I observed that in CosNotification.idl what is defined is _EventType and CosNotifyComm.idl is making a call to EventType (Note the underscore in front). I replaced the call in CosNotifyComm.idl with below and it worked

I am new bee in this forum and very new to TMF based implementation. I am trying to develop java based client for a TMF 814 based server using CORBA. Now as I understand I need to use IDL classes (I am using MTNM 3.5 ) I am getting this error while compiling IDL files

Hi,

If it helps on insights into this area, there is material in the Business Process Framework that bears on reservation. In that work, we looked at “pre-sales” activities that could involve reservation, and there is process flow material in GB921F on this.

Reservation is addressed directly with Service Configuration & Activation and Resource Provisioning as part of the Fulfilment area.

we are currently doing development in the area of planning and reservation of resources in transport networks. With respect to “planning” we try to follow MTOSI standards, but struggle to find something equivalent for “reservation”. By reservation we mean the administrative process of temporarily allocating a resource for a specific use, customer, etc. This resource could be in the planning phase, working phase etc.

We are aware of SD2-17_EnhancedResourceStates (part of NetworkResourceBasic DDP of MTOSI 2.0). However we do not find in this anything on 'reservation' or 'booking'

Just a thought, we havent come up with a published TIP yet. Just maybe, we should try and see if we can take care right at the modeling and design that the TIP SII, that the constructs support the Harmonized/Federate interface and it ready and waiting for us when we get to it.

My feeling is it would take a miracle for 3GPP DMTF IETF ITU-T all decide to agree on a command standard anytime soon. Are we by any chance wishing away the problem? We must face up to it. As a standards body, are we giving the users an interface that sets the standards in reducing the integration tax? Can we assure our subscribers who advertise conformity to the standards that they are in good hands? Do they have a truly technology agnostic solution with them? Can SPs blindly sign on the dotted line if a conforming product that they have is certified compliant?

If the answer is yes, i would even say let not even work on the Generalized interface and spend time and resources in value adding in a dfferent area, there is a lot that can be done.

If the answer is no, we should avoid seen as coming up with an "Yet Another Standard Interface" oxymoron.

TMF with MTOSI i felt was doing pretty good, up until we had SDH/SONET and even MPLS - Partly connection oriented paradigm.

With 3Con and xG/LTE things changed drastically, and my personal feeling is the challenge is more on the logical resource side. Service just needs a porting of MTOSI save for a conretizing here or a generalization there or an additional constrcut there. We must sit up and take a hard look at it who knows, with our collective strengths here we may find find that though the returns turn out to be ambitious, the path is not?

I am not saying let us go full steam ahead in one direction as yet, but we do need to be able to say yes, i have thouught about this and i am comfortable about knowing what it entails. Only then we are in a position to take a concrete decision either way.

Leaving the legalities or even the fairness of IP issues aside for a moment, thought is cheap, implementation is and commitment to a published standard is costly.

By pattern I am thinking interaction patterns of the type you see in Gamma’s book

One of the dilemmas is that specific techniques like reflection are not easily support by many current NMS implementations so my conclusion is that we need to support both and apply them according to the constraints of the deployment environment

Yes performance is a question indeed.

Could you clarify what you mean by Pattern?

There are at least two possibilities, i want to make sure i dont misinterpret you.

a) The way we do the translation, dynamic vs static.

b) The pattern that corresponds to the information model,

If considering b)then a point to note is that the individual models are by themselves statically defined, only the translation happens at run time (which anyway it should?). Reflection comes in primarily here as a development aid, but functionally and conceptually all you do is translation.
Dont know when Steve said we will only tell the mechanism, if we are going to tell down to this level of implementation granularity. If we are not this discussion will only be relevant to internal harmonization within TMF, else it will have a wider role to play.

I do know for network technology there has been a reluctance to use the dynamic patterns and this would apply to some application of inventory interfaces. My suspicion is that we need to support both static and dynamic patterns depending on whether the trade off between flexibility and efficiency is at one end of the scale a=or the other

Let me try providing more context to this. Consider for example Harmonization (in partcular the options that Steve has thrown up for consideration for Inventory Anchoring).

A lot of what we need to do there is dynamically check for type of object that is passed to a generalized interface and then take type sepcific actions. Cannot we use reflection for this purpose with a switch kind of statement for the types we know (or pull from a configuration file)? Very likely that Java provides a neater way of doing the same thing, i.e dynamic casting.?

Another thing we typically would need to do in such harmonization is to translate between one object and the other. And i am willing to bet that most Services and Resource objects and likely most others, i do not care which technology it comes from, will be representable as a data structure that is agnostic of specific information models and its complexities...

And likely many established info model out there will capture that structure, (SSCV...) and therefore cant we do a very significant code consolidation (with its attendant delivery time, maintanance, white box testing advantages) by using reflection. Once you have a layer of abstraction on top of your disparate objects, you have a neat unifrom way of handling translation as Graph(Tree ) operations kind of meshes well with the philosophy of harmonization and allows easy bringing in of sudden technology/modifications of technology that are thrwon unexpectedly of us.

Also such as uniform, and more importantly abstraction could lend itself well to configuration based capability generation for translation and perhaps people in the know could even come up with new flexibilities using Javas dynamic compilation, however i must hasten to admit i am not at all the authoritative final word on this.

Would performance be a spoiler? With the current levels of hardware capability available, i wonder though?

Hi David - I appreciate the questions and yes -

Correct me here but much of the TMF work is about developing models - and the only track to implementation is through interface specs or SID object class structures - and in both cases the issues of system wide information , identity and governace are probably not included. So its a fairly static agenda..

Interfaces - On the interface front a B2B industry grade - carrier grade interface that bolts together ordering and asset management processes, staff procedures, data base management , records and reporting of two big organisation I would estimate to be in the order of $50m with recuring per annum costs.. Such an interface would need considerable commercial resources to design, apply it and maintain it.. So that one is in the hands of the respective vendors and commercial contracts.

The MTOSI interface - in the OSS land and network equipment vendors hands - so again - while there is the inteface standard - there is always vendor specific management properties that come along with that.

Two very specialised areas ..

With the Web, OTT (social nets, etc) and MSO SDPs - etc I have grouped these together as they customer centric engineering contexts - object and events , personalisation and identification of users, devices, services prevail.

Here the "B2B" interfaces could use a human/machine client on one end and a machine on the other - cost with open source for shopping carts, web servers and some open SQL - and a few developers I would think such interfaces have been developed for $10k or less.

I have just purchased a home security DVR - 4-16 cameras $700 .. It looks like a web server on its external interface - gives me (my browser) a home page, a truck load of javascript and then H264 streams .. Cable modems have a similar "web services" interface. Even Skype uses the HTTP port - port 80. My point management interfaces - including M2M, fridges, media centres, home security, broadband access points, have adopted the Document Object Model (DOM) for style, presentation, javascript for "behaviour and usability" and HTTP/web services At the server side its a web server and all the content and objects that represent the users/devices of the system and the machinery required for service delivery..ie. that is why a MSO SDP has a web server function .. and a directory function and interfaces that can "talk to" infrastructure servers that may or may not look like a web server to the SDP ..

A few points in this response to the two questions -

Interfaces : I think the work on interfaces has two areas of specialisation - large scale network engineering - and OSS functions and while standards are used - Vendor specialations will always exist and network size, throughputs and topology and cost will drive those differentiators

And B2B intefaces - heavy duty - big vendor- big customer specific - and these seem to be OSS/BSS related not SDP (SDSS) related and will be commercially orchestrated re governance, security and certification.

On the other front web services enabled management - - customer centric, self care, domestic appliances, access systems.. DOM/Javascript, HTTP and services/entitlements - managed services delivery - that discussion does have a wider audience.

2nd question - happy to work on agenda - roadmap - Is there a TMF roadmap strategy document we can start with -
