We have worked with a lot of APIs here at Layer 7. And over time we’ve seen it all, ranging from the good to the bad. We’ve even seen the downright ugly. Now a good API is a beautiful thing – it encourages innovation, abstracts appropriately and is designed with enough forethought that nobody needs to change it down the road. Resiliency is a good quality in APIs, as they will probably be around for a long time. APIs are a little like cockroaches in that they will likely outlive... -
Skill at computing comes naturally to those who are adept at abstraction. The best developers can instantly change focus — one moment they are orchestrating high-level connections between abstract entities, the next they are sweating through the side effects of each individual line of code. Abstraction in computing not only provides necessary containment, it also offers clear boundaries. There is also something very liberating about that line you don’t need to cross. When I write Java... -
Finally, we’re getting back to business-as-usual mode after a very busy few weeks supporting TM Forum defense efforts across Europe. It started at the top of the month with a couple of European Defense Spotlights - "Adopting Standards to Reduce Costs". First stop was the Netherlands where we connected with old friends like NC3A, CSC, TNO, Thales, our host - CA, and with new friends the Dutch Defence and OSS Invent. We talked about everything - lessons learned from the Afghan Mission... -
For those of you who had planned to join the Security Management / Business Process Framework (eTOM) meeting on September 27 th , I wanted to let you know that the meeting has been rescheduled for October 11 th , and that our collective inconvenience was valued at $4.17. Yep, that’s the credit issued by my ISP’s customer service rep. (My ISP-issued modem died 10 minutes before the call, killing both landline and broadband services and squashing my hopes to hold this very important meeting... -
It has been quite a week for SOA. First, TheServerSide published a presentation delivered at their recent Java conference by Rod Johnson from VMware in which he essentially accused SOA of being a fad. Normally this is the kind of comment people would overlook; however, Rod, who is SVP, Middleware and GM of the SpringSource division at VMware, is very well regarded in the Java community, so his comments certainly carry weight. First to cry foul was Dave Linthicum writing in Infoworld, who made the... -
“If your tools don’t work for you, get rid of them,” is a simple creed I learned from my father in the workshop. Over the years, I have found it is just as relevant when applied to software, where virtual tools abound, but with often-dubious value. OAuth is an emerging technology that has lately been in need of useful tools, and to fill this gap we are introducing an OAuth toolkit into Layer 7’s SecureSpan and CloudSpan Gateways. OAuth isn’t exactly new to Layer 7; we... -
Team Action Week Baltimore, July 18-22 nd , is shaping up to be our best Defense event to date! Not only will we be meeting across the week to collaborate on our most pressing topics - Security, Policy, Spectrum and Cloud Management, but we’ll be hosting our first Defense Implementers Workshop. The Defense Implementers Workshop, immediately following the Frameworx Spotlight on Monday, July 18 th , aims to arm our TM Forum Defense members with business justification, tools and strategies for... -
Running a Data Centre in today’s IT and business environment means trying to meet multiple requirements, many of which are conflicting in their demands. Many in the business community have now realised that there is another way of consuming IT services and are driving towards cloud based IT and out of the data centre. This is evidenced by the growing use of SaaS and IaaS platforms like force.com and Amazon EC2. The increasing concern over the environment and the sustainability of our planet... -
I’ll be at the TMForum Management World show this May 23-26, 2011 in Dublin, Ireland to participate in the catalyst demonstrating cloud network elasticity , which is sponsored by Deutsche Telekom and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia . For those of you not yet familiar with TMForum , it is (from their web site) “the world’s leading industry association focused on enabling best-in-class IT for service providers in the communications, media, defense and cloud service markets.”... -
Whether you are a Digital Native or a Digital Immigrant you cannot be ignorant of the deep transformation we are experiencing regarding the ubiquitous Services delivery. Cloud is everywhere and brings with it many promises…ok but back on earth: what does it really mean for people in the real life? How that paradigm will transform the way we are going to consume or provide services in a mission critical context? What are the real cornerstones Defense Cloud operators have to master and control... | | Paid Advertisement | | | | | Copyright © 1988-2012, TeleManagement Forum. All Rights Reserved | | | | | |
