Australia’s Optus launches iPhone billing application

Share |

Optus iPhone users can download  the new ‘My Account’ Optus service express billing application for free from the Apple iTunes store and, as well as checking their current billing, customers can view their billing history, pay bills or top-up (recharge) pre-paid accounts via their iPhone.

The new, free service is available for download to both Optus consumer post-paid and pre-paid customers. For post-paid customers, the My Account application will allow them to view their unbilled usage for eligible iPhone plans, view their last four bills, and pay their bill by credit card.  Pre-paid customers they will be allowed to view their balance, up to 100 of their most recent transactions, or top-up (recharge) their account via credit card or recharge voucher.

The My Account application is free for both download and use, with data usage not charged when using the application on the Optus network.

This is a great move by Optus and sets an example for other service providers. There is no doubt that this application will be useful and popular for customers and goes a long way to reducing reliance on paper bills, something the TM Forum’s ‘Kill the Bill’ campaign is striving to achieve. Let's hope the same functionality can be offered on other handsets in the near future.

We've seen a lot of great apps being introduced for the iPhone lately in the revenue management area - including an app that lets you use the iPhone as a full blown creditcard terminal (see: www.tuaw.com/.../credit-card-terminals-for-iphone).

But this particular one should be 'standard issue' for every mobile operator. It lets the user keep track of its bills on the most logical place (the mobile device) - making the burden of remembering the sign-on credentials for every online customer portal a thing of the past.
