I dread ‘bill shock’ stories more than calls from my bank manager, but this one reported in Hong Kong’s, South China Morning Post is so topical I just had to write about it. Blackberry maker, Research in Motion, is adding credit card and carrier billing payments options to its App World portal. This news coincided with a notification to its developer community and content partners that the revenue share for them will be reduced from 80 per cent to 70 per cent, bringing App World in line with the likes of Apple’s App Store and the Android Marketplace. Whilst we have been concentrating our efforts on working out how CSPs, and mobile operators in particular, can cash in on the data explosion by charging customers for usage rather than offering unlimited, flat-rate plans The Financial Times, no less, has come up with a brilliant idea. The FT report focusses not on the customers but those companies that generate the majority of that booming online traffic. According to a recent article in moconews.net , some mobile operators are generating 'extra' revenues from Google. Google has always been in the business of generating online advertising revenues and even sharing some with carrier and handset partners, but it has clarified that this is limited to search and does not extend to applications like YouTube or Maps, or Android apps sold OTT.
