TM Forum projects are defined and staffed by its members – across all types of companies and from around the world. Any member may suggest a topic and solicit participation from other members to create a new project team or extend the work of an existing team. Getting involved on a team, either as a leader or a participant, is the best way to drive the industry in a direction that is best for your company’s business and for you to stay one step ahead of the competition. In addition, involvement with collaboration teams is personally rewarding, with participants having the opportunity to share ideas with like-minded professionals about common areas of interest. (It can also be a lot of fun!) |
What does it take to Participate?
Participating on a team does not mean a full time commitment. Even an hour or two a week is enough to have a significant impact on the direction of a project. Much of the work of teams is carried out using dedicated email exploders and through regular conference calls. The TM Forum also arranges two Team Action Week (TAW) events per year where team members are encouraged to come together to work on their deliverables in a comfortable collaborative environment and to network with members of other teams. Attendance at TAWs is not compulsory but it is a great opportunity to meet up with your team colleagues, representatives from your customer companies, with your competitors, and the leaders in the OSS/BSS industry. Some teams also arrange additional face to face meetings.
What levels of participation are open to members? Ther are are a wide range of participation opportunities available, requiring small to large commitments. Examples include:
- Team Leader: Runs a team, including hosting regular teleconference meetings and conducting periodic face to face meetings. Assigns roles on the team and follows up on the work. This job is a significant commitment but is has a big impact, too, as a whole area of the industry can be shaped by the work of a successful team. Companies holding a team leader role often find that it gives them a status that differentiates them from the rest of their peer group.
- Team Participant: Contributes on a regular basis and attends meetings when possible. This commitment is typically a small number of hours per week
- One Time Contributor: Make a contribution to a team in a particular area of expertise. This type of contribution usually consists of a few hours to write the contibuted document plus participation on a small number of team calls, or one visit to Team Action Week.
- Marketing Representative: More marketing oriented? All teams need marketing expertise to help create content for the TM Forum website, datasheets, press releases and presentations to communicate the work of the team to the industry.
- Team Observer: Watches the work of the team and comments where appropriate. This is a minimal commitment.
An additional benefit for Team Leader and Team Participant roles is the recognition given to the individual team member and their company in association with the produced deliverable.
