University of Piraeus Department of Digital Systems Telecommunication Networks and Integrated Services Laboratory The University of Piraeus Research Center (UPRC) provides administration and technological support to basic and applied research carried out by the teaching staff of the University of Piraeus, Greece, at the international or national level. Framed within the University of Piraeus are the Department of Digital Systems (DS) and the laboratory of Telecommunication Networks and integrated Services (TNS) laboratory. UPRC (TNS) is very actively involved in the areas of cognitive networks and services, autonomic computing, networked information systems, Internet technologies, wireless and broadband networks, network and service management, policy based management, design and management of B3G/4G mobile and wired broadband networks, network simulation and performance evaluation, heuristic- and machine learning-based optimization algorithms, service and software engineering. UPRC through the members of the TNS laboratory has an extensive portfolio of achievements in the areas of conceptualizing research areas, designing/ developing/ disseminating solutions, validating through various means and demonstrations. The members of the TNS laboratory publish extensively in the top journals and magazines worldwide, e.g., IEEE, ACM, Elsevier, Springer, Wiley, and contribute to the main conferences in the field. Moreover, TNS laboratory members have received awards of excellence from industry and academia for diploma thesis, M.Sc. thesis, PhDs (e.g., Ericsson Awards of Excellence in Telecommunications etc.). UPRC’s current research activities involve participation in research projects partially funded by EU under FP7. More specifically UPRC: ? leads the project OneFIT (Opportunistic Networks and Cognitive Management Systems for Efficient Application Provision in the Future Internet), with Prof. Demestichas being the Project Manager (07.2010 – 12.2012), ? participates in the UniverSelf project (09.2010 – 08.2013), in which Prof. Demestichas serves as deputy leader of the “Unified Management Framework” workpackage, ? participates in ACROPOLIS (Advanced coexistence technologies for Radio Optimisation in Licenced and Unlicensed Spectrum) project (10.2010 – 09.2013), ? participates in iCore project (10.2011 – 09.2014), ? is the National representative and leads WG4, on “intersystem cooperation and coexistence” in COST ICT Action IC0902 (01.2010 – 12.2013). UPRC has been involved in FP7/ ICT End-to-End Efficiency (E3) Project (Technical Management and WP Leadership) (01/2008-12/2009). Moreover, UPRC has been involved in FP6/ IST End-to-End Reconfigurability (E2R) Phase I (01/2004-12/2005) and II (01/2006-12/2007) (WP Leadership in both projects). UPRC members have also participated in the Eureka/Celtic framework, namely through the Impulse (09/2004-06/2008) and WIN-HPN projects (2006-2007) (WP Leadership), and FP5/IST Projects MONASIDRE (01/2001-12/2002) (Project management), CREDO (01/2002-12/2003) (WP Leadership), SHUFFLE (01/2000-06/2002) (WP Leadership) and MOEBIUS (01/2000-06/2002) (WP Leadership). Moreover, there has been participation and roles undertaken in the context of FP4, RACE I and II, BRITE EURAM and EURET. UPRC members have also been in Projects funded by the Ministry of Development - General Secretariat of Research and Development, namely DIOSKOUROI (Network of excellence for the provision of training and consultancy services on advanced information and communication technologies) (10/2003-12/2005) and ARIADNE (Dynamic spectrum management, planning and management of 4G wireless access networks and terminals) (11/2005-06/2009). UPRC has cooperated with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Economics and Finance, in undertaking Projects and offering consultancy services. Furthermore, UPRC has been also very active in standardization bodies including IEEE/SCC41 P1900.4 and amendments (P1900.4a/P1900.4.1), also holding the Technical Editorship for IEEE P1900.4. Moreover, UPRC in highly involved in the European Telecommunications and Standardization Institute (ETSI), in which actively participated in finalising two official reports in ETSI TC RRS, as well as in the elaboration of a technical report on a Functional Architecture (FA) of radio and spectrum resources optimisation mechanisms, published under the number ETSI TR 102.682, which was accepted. UPRC holds the position of rapporteur in the Working Group 3 (WG3) on the “Functional Architecture and CPC”. Finally, UPRC holds the chairman position of WWRF WG6 “Cognitive Wireless Networks and Systems” since 2004.
