5G greener telco – Phase II

Winner! 2020 Catalyst Awards: Outstanding Catalyst – Impact for Society

C20.0.06

The doubling of the number of 5G base stations and the introduction of large-scale Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technology have led to a significant increase in 5G power consumption. The power consumption of 5G base stations is 2.5 to 3.5 times that of 4G base stations, which is a huge test for the construction and maintenance of operators. Building a greener and sustainable 5G network has become one of the hotspots in the field of operation management.

The energy saving solution developed by this Catalyst project consists of three parts:

  • coordination between 4G and 5G for energy saving
  • 5G cell sleep
  • tunnel shutdown strategy in the background of 5G large-scale antenna

There are three pillars in the solution to improving the efficiency of 5G resource usage. First is building the user perception density center using user perception data and user positioning data. Next is using that as input to perform a 5G coverage simulation. The third step is dynamic adjustment of the massive 5G MIMO parameter to improve the efficiency of the 5G resource usage.

The project will show how the technology can be used to create a sustainable 5G future.

Phase I: AI for greener telco

This AI-based LTE energy-saving project is jointly developed by China Telecom, AsiaInfo, NetScout, and DataSpark. It is expected to establish an intelligent LTE cell energy management to reduce the network OPEX & Carbon footprint, while ensuring the customer experience measured by ECS (Emotional Connection Score). The solution extends to address energy efficiency in 5G network planning.
