Digital Ecosystem Management – The new way for telcos to grow

Global telco growth is forecast at 0.9% per annum for the next 5 years. Is this good enough? Are we leveraging our significant assets and capabilities to the full? Can we really attract the right talent and investment if we cannot grow at a more exciting rate? Are we fulfilling our potential? Or are we happy running a low growth, utility business for the foreseeable future? Are we really creating a position to be successful in the digital economy and take advantage of major global economic trends?

The World Economic Forum suggests we are on the brink of a ‘4th Industrial Revolution’ – the physical, digital and biological worlds converging to create unprecedented levels of innovation and disruption.

Estimates suggest an $8 trillion IoT-enabled B2B and B2C services market opening up over the next 10 years – a golden new addressable market for all telcos, if we can understand it’s nature and define our role in enabling it.

To do so, and to create a path to a new way to grow, we need to adopt a new discipline called ‘Digital Ecosystem Management’. This is about adapting the increasingly dominant platform-based business models and strategies of ‘digital native’ organisations like Apple, Google, Amazon, Uber and Alibaba. Telcos have dabbled with this in the past, with half-hearted attempts in advertising, payments, appstores, content and so on. They are now making tentative steps with cloud and IoT platforms.

But the time has come to fully embrace Digital Ecosystem Management – the most powerful business model in the digital economy – and bake it into our own growth strategies and operations.

TM Forum and BearingPoint have been developing and delivering the methods and tools to enable this transformation for telcos. In collaboration with the world’s leading experts in platform business models from MIT’s Initiative on the Digital Economy, we invite you to participate with your peers in a high impact workshop on the afternoon before Mobile World Congress, to stimulate your growth plans.
