NICE, France — TM Forum Live! 2016 — “Digital transformation” was one of the key phrases in use at this year’s TM Forum Live! Event in the south of France and was the focus of a breakfast briefing that witnessed presentations by senior executives from multiple Tier 1 service providers.
The key takeaway from that breakfast, and indeed from the whole show, is that communications service providers (CSPs) understand that they need to revamp their processes, working cultures, portfolios and back office/IT systems in order to support the growing range of services and applications they need to offer to consumer, enterprise and wholesale customers.
But each case is different: Each CSP is starting its digital transformation with a different approach and with different priorities, even if the goal is roughly the same. For some the focus is on bringing the entire company into the digital age, so that everyone working at a CSP is working in a digital environment every day and so able to use that platform to support the operator’s digital services ambitions.
For others the focus is on building out the services portfolio immediately, whether organically or via M&A activity.
Alternatively, the transformation could be at the network and supporting OSS level, with the introduction of virtualization and new management and orchestration tools that help enable the creation of new, automated services.
