You're right.  Treating customer data as a strategic asset is an essential for future success.  And if you truly treat it as a strategic asset you need to exploit this asset and be inventive in finding ways of getting over the regulatory hurdles. - which are there to stop mis-use, but also have the side-effect of stopping sensible use.  But the first step is finding cost-effective and repeatable ways of turning this data into usable information.

Andrew, thanks for clarifying the situation with regard to the independents. I was careful to point out that NBN was 'one of their main decision factors' and certainly not the only one, although some press outlets were playing that card rather heavily at the time.

Just one note that was raised in a very long thread recently by Francis Anderson - basically Products and Services have different lifecycle than Resources. Resources lifecycle relates to the SP while Service/Product relates to the customer. During fulfilment we create new instances of Products and Services while we only allocate Resources which are created in different processes and are 'only' allocated in the fulfillment process. This is just another point to think about - things are not that simple.
