Smart Energy is the convergence of digital energy services with the smart grid. Smart Energy solutions will transform the way utilities operate, offering new situational awareness at every point in the energy value chain; new value-added services for customers; and new expectations from stakeholders. From smart meters to consumer-owned intelligent devices communicating with the grid, the possibilities are endless. And the value of this market will be significant – with forecasts reaching as high as $100 billion by 2020.
The primary focus of TM Forum’s Smart Energy Program is to collaborate with utilities and vendor partners to address the opportunities and challenges of managing IT and OT convergences and sophisticated communications networks that remotely monitor and control power grids and document the business process tools, standards and best practices needed to ensure reliability, economy, rapid scalability and interoperability of mission-critical operations.
We apply our proven Frameworx and Open Digital Ecosystem assets to support Smart Energy projects, including Catalyst Projects that serve as proof of concepts for important utility challenges that range from deploying IPv6 AMI networks to enhanced customer engagement programs.
Stakeholder-developed documents and tools include blueprints, process templates, models, and best practices as well as proof of concepts in award- winning showcase Catalysts.
Smart Energy Catalysts have addressed:
- Provisioning smart home devices in demand side management programs
- Microgrid and DER partner integration and asset management
- Customer centricity across mulitiple channels of communication
- Cybersecurity in mission-critical operations
- Data analytics that deliver strategic and tactical value
- New digital services development
- Mobile workforce and mobility apps
WINNER, Most Innovative Catalyst project: Smart Energy: Connected home devices and electric vehicles for smart energy benefits:
Building on previous projects showcased in San Jose 2014 and Nice 2015, this Catalyst project showcased several examples of overall inter-connected smart energy end-to-end flows. It also added new key areas, use cases and scenarios that interconnect and combine smart energy with other Internet of Things applications in entirely new contexts.
