Becoming a ‘truly-digital’ telco cannot be fulfilled until the objectives around digitization or all aspects of transformation as defined by the TM Forum Digital Maturity Model (DMM) are achieved.

We now have an industry standard TM Forum Digital Maturity Model built from a wealth of know-how and expertise from the communications industry. The Digital Maturity Model is a great way of uncovering of what is important for organizations to consider on planning for their own digital journeys, helping them benchmark where they sit in their digital journey across their organizations and articulating the way forward with a common language across all stakeholder groups. We’ve been very much involved in helping to create it and we expect to continue to work closely with TM Forum to drive the evolution of the Digital Maturity Model

Merve Oral, Management Consultant, Detecon International GmbH

The rise of digital capabilities is accelerating collaboration across ecosystems with a focus on capitalizing on new market opportunities, optimizing business models and exceeding customer expectations. Companies will find the Digital Maturity Model to be an extremely helpful tool to evaluate their current level of digital efficacy and achieve their ambitions as they look to win the digital transformation race

Interview with DMM Certified Partner, Detecon Consulting

Why does Detecon use TM Forum’s Digital Maturity Model (DMM)?

From day one, Detecon has been member of the leadership team in TM Forum for developing the first industry-agreed Digital Maturity Model, metrics and methodology. Detecon has identified the need for Communication Service Providers (CSPs) to utilize a standardized model and approach for digital transformation.

During digital transformation journeys, CSPs are confronted with similar questions including:

  1. What does digitization truly mean for the business?
  2. How are “digital target states” in different dimensions of the business defined concretely?
  3. How can the defined “digital target states” actually be achieved across various dimensions of the business?
  4. What is the current digital maturity level in those dimensions of the business that are supposed to be transformed?
  5. How can the organization be transformed from the current digital maturity level to the desired “digital target state” in different dimensions of the business?

TM Forum’s DMM will help CSPs to answer all those questions.

The DMM considers maturity across the five key dimensions Customer, Strategy, Technology, Operations, as well as Culture, People and Organization. Each dimension contains a comprehensive set of sub-dimensions, criteria and target state descriptions to assess digital maturity across the CSP. Through an easy-to-use App, CSPs can assess their digital maturity across every department and easily identify areas for improvement.

How does Detecon use the DMM?

Based on experience gained during DMM development and being aware of specific requirements of CSP’s in the international telco industry, Detecon has developed a tailor made 6-step approach for utilizing the DMM in Digital Transformation projects:

  1. Selection of business dimensions and sub-dimensions in scope for digital maturity assessment and transformation.
  2. Determination of current maturity level in selected business dimensions and sub-dimensions by applying DMM evaluation criteria.
  3. Gap analysis between assessed digital maturity level and digital target state descriptions for selected business dimensions and sub-dimensions.
  4. Definition and detailing of concrete optimization measures for closing the gap between current digital maturity level and digital target state descriptions for selected business dimensions and sub-dimensions.
  5. Prioritization of optimization measures using predefined criteria and development of comprehensive digital transformation roadmap for optimization measure implementation.
  6. Project management, supervision of optimization measure realization, progress monitoring, risk and issue management.
